Quick answer
To stop OneDrive syncing on Windows 11, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar, open Help & Settings, then Settings, go to the Account tab, and select Unlink this PC, then Unlink account. You won’t lose any files; they stay at OneDrive.com. To stop for a few hours instead, right-click the icon and pause sync for 2, 8, or 24 hours (Microsoft Support, October 26, 2026).
Key takeaways
- Pause stops syncing for 2, 8, or 24 hours, then resumes on its own.
- Choose folders stops specific folders syncing to this PC while keeping them online.
- Stop folder backup stops OneDrive backing up Desktop, Documents, or Pictures.
- Unlink this PC stops all syncing on that computer; files stay in OneDrive online.
- Uninstall is possible on most Windows 10 and 11 PCs via Add or remove programs; unlinking or uninstalling doesn’t delete your files.

Which option do you need?
Pick the lightest option that solves your problem. Microsoft suggests unlinking as the easiest way to stop using OneDrive on a computer, and pausing if you only want a short break (Microsoft Support). New to OneDrive? Our What is OneDrive? guide explains how it works.
| Goal | Option | Files on this PC | Files online |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short break (slow or metered connection) | Pause sync | Stay | Stay |
| Stop until you choose to restart | Quit OneDrive | Stay | Stay |
| Free up disk space from some folders | Choose folders (uncheck) | Removed from this PC | Stay |
| Stop syncing Desktop, Documents, Pictures | Stop folder backup | Your choice | Your choice |
| Stop all syncing on this computer | Unlink this PC | Stay | Stay |
| Remove the app | Uninstall (where allowed) | Stay | Stay |
How to pause OneDrive sync
Right-click the OneDrive icon, choose Pause syncing, and pick 2, 8, or 24 hours.
- Find the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area.
- Right-click it (Ctrl-click on a Mac).
- Choose Pause syncing, then pick 2 hours, 8 hours, or 24 hours.
- Check the icon shows Paused.
Sync resumes by itself when the time is up, or you can select the paused icon and resume any time. OneDrive also pauses on its own when your PC is in battery saver mode or on a metered network. If you use both a personal and a work or school account, each pauses separately (Microsoft Support).
How to quit OneDrive until you restart it
Right-click the OneDrive icon, select Pause syncing, and then select Quit OneDrive. Syncing stops until you start the app again. To restart it, press the Windows key, type OneDrive, and select the OneDrive app (Microsoft Support).
How to stop syncing certain folders
Open OneDrive Settings, go to the Account tab, select Choose folders, and uncheck the folders you don’t want on this PC.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon, then Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Open the Account tab and select Choose folders.
- Uncheck the folders you don’t want to sync to this computer, then select OK.
Unchecked folders are removed from this PC but stay in OneDrive online. The setting applies only to this computer and this account. Microsoft notes that Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Personal Vault can’t be unchecked here; to stop those, use folder backup settings below (Microsoft Support).
Just short on space?
If you only want to save disk space, you may not need to stop syncing at all. Files On-Demand (on by default in recent versions) lets you right-click a file or folder and choose Free up space, which keeps it online-only and shows a blue cloud icon. Always keep on this device does the opposite (Microsoft Support).
How to stop OneDrive backing up Desktop, Documents, and Pictures
Open OneDrive Settings, go to Sync and backup, select Manage backup, and turn off the folder’s toggle.
- Open OneDrive Settings from the cloud icon (Help & Settings, then Settings).
- Go to the Sync and backup tab and select Manage backup.
- Turn off the toggle for Desktop, Documents, Pictures, or another folder.
- Choose where the files live: Keep the files only in OneDrive (removed from your computer) or Keep the files only on my PC (removed from OneDrive).
Check before you confirm
Read the choice carefully. “Keep the files only on my PC” removes them from OneDrive, so they’re no longer backed up online. Files that are online-only need to be downloaded first if you want them on your PC (Microsoft Support).
How to unlink a PC from OneDrive (Windows 11)
Unlinking stops all OneDrive syncing on that computer without deleting anything.
- Select the OneDrive cloud in the taskbar notification area.
- Select Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Go to the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC, then Unlink account.
Microsoft says you won’t lose files or data by unlinking; you can still reach everything at OneDrive.com (Microsoft Support). Files already on the PC stay in the folder but stop syncing. If you sign in again later, OneDrive tells you the folder already exists; select Use this folder, and changes made while you were unlinked sync back (Microsoft Support).
How to hide or uninstall OneDrive
On most Windows 10 and 11 PCs you can uninstall OneDrive from Add or remove programs; where it’s built in, you can hide it instead.
Uninstall
- Select Start, type Programs, and choose Add or remove programs.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive in the list of installed apps.
- Select Uninstall and confirm, entering an admin password if asked.
Hide (if it can’t be uninstalled)
- Unlink the PC first, using the steps above.
- Open File Explorer, right-click OneDrive, and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, check Hidden next to Attributes.
- Right-click the OneDrive icon, select Pause syncing, then Quit OneDrive to remove it from the notification area.

How to stop OneDrive syncing on a Mac
Click the OneDrive cloud in the menu bar, open Help & Settings, choose Preferences, go to Account, and select Unlink this Mac. To pause, Ctrl-click the icon and choose 2, 8, or 24 hours. To remove the app, drag OneDrive to the Trash. If you stop backing up a Mac folder, the files already backed up stay in OneDrive (Microsoft Support, Back up your folders).
Will deleting files on my PC delete them from OneDrive?
Assume yes while sync is on. OneDrive keeps the folder on your PC and your online OneDrive matched, so treat deleting a file in the OneDrive folder as deleting it everywhere. To clear disk space safely, use Free up space or Choose folders instead. If you delete something by mistake, check your Windows Recycle Bin or the OneDrive recycle bin online: personal accounts can restore deleted files for 30 days, and work or school accounts for 93 days unless an admin changed that setting (Microsoft Support).
Before you clean up the folder
Unlinking disconnects your local folder from the cloud, but Microsoft says changes made while you’re unlinked sync once you link again (Microsoft Support). If you plan to re-link this PC later, don’t delete local files you still want online.
Troubleshooting
I can’t find the OneDrive icon
OneDrive may not be running. Type OneDrive in the Start search box and open the app; the cloud icon should appear in the notification area (Microsoft Support).
OneDrive is stuck on “Processing changes”
Microsoft suggests pausing and resuming sync first (Microsoft Support). If that doesn’t help, you can reset OneDrive: press Windows key + R and run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset. A reset doesn’t remove your files, but it disconnects all sync connections, so you’ll need to choose your folders again afterward (Microsoft Support).
Choose folders won’t let me uncheck Desktop or Documents
Those folders are controlled by folder backup. Turn them off under Sync and backup, then Manage backup (Microsoft Support).
