iMazing vs 3uTools: Which iPhone Manager Should You Use?

No affiliate links or sponsorship. Features, versions, and policies come from iMazing’s, 3uTools’ and Apple’s own pages, checked October 27, 2026. We didn’t install either app or connect a device, so there are no speed claims or screenshots.

Quick answer

iMazing vs 3uTools: choose iMazing if you mainly want reliable, private iPhone backups and data exports from a known company; choose 3uTools if you want a free toolbox for checking a device, flashing iOS firmware, and other advanced tasks. iMazing is made by DigiDNA in Geneva, Switzerland, and needs a paid license for its full features. 3uTools is free for all users, but its site doesn’t name the company behind it, and some of its tools carry real risks. For simple backups, Apple’s own Finder or Apple Devices app is free and enough for most people.

Key takeaways

  • Price: 3uTools is free; iMazing has many free features, but unlimited exports, advanced restore options, and iOS updates need a paid license.
  • Backups: iMazing keeps snapshot backups without overwriting old ones and offers free automatic wireless backups for personal use.
  • Advanced tools: 3uTools adds firmware flashing, a device verification report, an App Market, and a toolbox with Virtual Location and Stop iOS Update.
  • Trust: iMazing names its developer and says data stays on your computer; 3uTools lists only a Gmail contact and its privacy statement says you may be asked for your device’s account and password.
  • Platforms: iMazing runs on Mac and Windows; 3uTools has Windows, Mac, and Linux builds.

Our verdict

Choose iMazing if you want versioned iPhone and iPad backups, message and data exports, and a clearly identified Swiss developer, and you’re willing to pay for a license.

Choose 3uTools only if you need its free device checks or firmware tools, download it from 3u.com, and avoid features such as jailbreaking or location spoofing.

How we compared

We compared the two using iMazing’s and 3uTools’ official sites, help guides, and policies, plus Apple Support, all re-checked October 27, 2026 (PKT). We didn’t install either app, so there are no performance or reliability claims. iMazing’s store didn’t show a price on our check, so we don’t quote one.

Who makes them

iMazing comes from a clearly identified company. It’s made by DigiDNA, an independent developer incorporated in 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland, which launched the file-transfer tool DiskAid in 2008 and rebranded it as iMazing in 2014 (iMazing).

3uTools describes itself as an all-in-one tool for iOS devices that helps you manage data files, flash firmware, and back up and restore data (3uTools). Its About page gives a Gmail address as the contact and doesn’t name a company. Our 3uTools guide covers it in more depth.

Pricing and licenses

3uTools costs nothing: its own tutorial says “3uTools is free for all users” (3uTools).

iMazing is free to try, paid for full use. iMazing says many of its features are free, but unlimited data exports, advanced restore options, updating or reinstalling iOS, and device management need a license (iMazing). A Personal Subscription covers up to 20 devices per year, can be installed on unlimited computers (Mac or PC), and releases device slots after 270 days of inactivity; Business Subscriptions release them after 90 days (iMazing licenses). Check iMazing’s store for the current price in your country.

Backups

Backups are iMazing’s strongest area. iMazing says it creates snapshots that keep your earlier iPhone and iPad backups instead of overwriting them, supports Apple’s backup encryption, can save backups to an external drive or NAS, and offers automatic wireless backups for free for personal use (iMazing). It also says all data is stored locally and processed on your computer, with nothing sent to iMazing servers or any cloud (iMazing FAQ).

3uTools has a Back up/Restore tool in its toolbox for a full backup. Its guide notes that a password-protected backup can’t be restored without the password, a backup can’t be larger than the device’s free storage, and a backup from a newer iOS version can’t be restored to a device on an older version (3uTools).

Backup tip

Whatever tool you use, keep more than one copy. Apple says you need to turn on “Encrypt local backup” to save Health and Activity data, and you can’t recover that backup without its password (Apple Support).

Device tools and extras

3uTools packs in far more device tools. On its Windows product page it lists a verification report that checks device hardware and flags refurbished or storage-upgraded devices, Smart Flash firmware downloads with “Retain Data” and “Deep Clean” modes, an App Market for downloading apps with “No Apple ID needed”, and a toolbox with Backup/Restore, Stop iOS Update, Batch Activate/Erase, Virtual Location, and more (3uTools). Current builds are V9.12 for Windows (October 23, 2026), V9.07 for Mac, and V9.03 for Linux (3uTools).

iMazing focuses on data: backups, exports, and transfers, plus iOS updates and reinstalls with a license. It also has a free Spyware Analyzer that uses indicators from Amnesty International’s open-source Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) to look for signs of spyware such as Pegasus and Predator (iMazing). Version 3.6.5 (September 23, 2026) supports macOS 10.12 or later and Windows 7 or later (iMazing).

Privacy and safety

Read 3uTools’ privacy statement before you use it. It says that for some tools “you may be asked to enter your device’s account and password” (3uTools). Only enter your Apple Account password where you understand why it’s needed.

Before you flash or jailbreak

Jailbreaking, which 3uTools offers, bypasses iOS security features. Apple warns it can lead to security vulnerabilities, crashes, data loss, and shortened battery life (Apple). Flashing firmware can also wipe your device, and if Find My was on, Activation Lock will ask for the owner’s Apple Account (Apple Support). Back up first and don’t flash a device you don’t own.

Download 3uTools only from 3u.com. Lookalike domains have existed: 3u-tools.com, registered in February 2025, is now on a registry hold (Verisign RDAP). If you want options beyond these two, see our 3uTools alternatives list.

Do you need either? Apple’s free tools

For everyday backups and restores, Apple’s own tools are free. On a Mac, back up and restore with the Finder; on a Windows PC, Apple points you to the Apple Devices app or iTunes (Apple Support, Apple Support). Apple also explains how to restore an iPhone to factory settings with a computer (Apple Support).

Which should you use?

  • You want versioned backups and data exports: iMazing.
  • You’re checking a used iPhone before buying: 3uTools’ verification report can help, but also confirm Activation Lock is off with the seller.
  • You’re worried about spyware: iMazing’s free Spyware Analyzer.
  • You need to flash or reinstall iOS: Apple’s Finder or Apple Devices app first; 3uTools or a paid iMazing license if you need more control.
  • You use Linux: 3uTools (iMazing has no Linux build).
  • You just want a backup: Apple’s free tools are enough.

FAQ

Is iMazing better than 3uTools?

For backups, data exports, and clear company information, iMazing is the stronger choice. 3uTools has more free device tools, such as firmware flashing and a verification report.

Is 3uTools free?

Yes. 3uTools says it’s free for all users. iMazing has free features too, but its full feature set needs a paid license.

Is 3uTools safe?

Download it only from 3u.com and be careful with features like jailbreaking, flashing, and Virtual Location. Its privacy statement says you may be asked for your device’s account and password, and its site doesn’t name the company behind it.

Does iMazing upload my data to the cloud?

iMazing says all data is stored and processed locally on your computer, with no data sent to iMazing servers or any cloud.

Can iMazing or 3uTools bypass Activation Lock?

Don’t rely on any tool for that. Activation Lock is tied to the owner’s Apple Account, and Apple says that account’s password is required to turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate it.

Do I need iMazing or 3uTools to back up my iPhone?

No. You can back up to a Mac with the Finder, to a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app or iTunes, or to iCloud.
