We didn’t capture test recordings on a physical iPhone. Labels match Apple’s published wording as of October 14, 2026. More in our how-to guides.
Quick answer
Open Control Center, tap the gray Screen Recording (Record) button, wait for the three-second countdown, then leave Control Center and use your iPhone normally. Stop from the red status indicator (or the red Record control in Control Center). The video saves to Photos. For microphone audio, touch and hold Record, turn Microphone on, then start recording.
Key takeaways
- Add the control first if you don’t see Record: customize Control Center → Add a Control → Screen Recording.
- With sound: touch and hold the Record control, tap Microphone so it’s on, then start (Apple Support HT102653).
- Where it saves: Photos library; the iPhone User Guide also lists Collections → Media Types → Screen Recordings.
- Limits Apple documents: some apps block recording; you can’t screen-record and use screen mirroring at the same time.
- No sound? Microphone may be off, the app may block audio, or only system UI audio is missing depending on how you started the recording.
How this guide was checked
Steps below follow Apple Support HT102653 (Record the screen on iPhone), the iPhone User Guide: Take a screen recording, Customize Control Center, Change the screen capture settings, and How to edit videos / Trim video length. Quoted control names match those pages. Layout can differ slightly by iOS version and whether your iPhone has a Home button, Face ID, or Dynamic Island.
Add Screen Recording to Control Center
Apple Support says that if you don’t see the Record button, add it to Control Center. The iPhone User Guide points to Customize controls. On current iOS, you edit Control Center on the device like this:
- Open Control Center: on iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner; on iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom (User Guide / HT102351).
- Tap the control that begins editing Control Center (Apple’s guide shows an edit control at the top of Control Center).
- Tap Add a Control at the bottom to open the controls gallery.
- Tap Screen Recording to add it.
- Close Control Center when you finish (swipe up from the bottom center on Face ID models, or press Home).
You can rearrange or remove controls the same way. If Record still doesn’t appear, check that you’re looking in the Control Center group where you added it (current iOS can have more than one group of controls).
Start and stop a screen recording
From Apple Support HT102653:
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Center (Home-button models: swipe up from the bottom).
- Tap the gray Record button, then wait for the three-second countdown.
- Exit Control Center so you can record the screen.
- To stop: tap the Screen Recording button at the top of your screen, then tap the Stop button — or open Control Center and tap the red Record button.
The User Guide adds model-specific stop cues: on iPhone with Dynamic Island, tap the red circle, then stop; on other models, tap the red timer in the top left, then Stop.
Before you record
Apple documents two hard limits: some apps might not allow you to record audio or video, and you can’t record your screen and use screen mirroring at the same time (HT102653, User Guide).
Screen record with sound (microphone on)
Device audio and microphone behavior depend on how you start the recording. Apple’s with-audio steps on HT102653:
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap and hold the gray Record button.
- Tap the Microphone button to turn it on.
- Tap the gray Record button, then wait for the three-second countdown.
- Exit Control Center to record your screen.
- Stop with the red indicator or the red Record control, as above.
The User Guide wording is similar: touch and hold the Screen Recording control, tap Microphone to turn it on, then tap Start Recording, and wait for the countdown. If Microphone is off, the recording may capture little or no mic audio even though the screen video looks fine.
Where your recording is saved
Apple Support says: open the Photos app and select your screen recording in your Library. The User Guide is more specific for browsing by type:
- Go to the Photos app on your iPhone.
- Tap Collections, scroll down to Media Types, then tap Screen Recordings.
Screen recordings are saved as videos in your photo library. Under Settings → General → Screen Capture, Apple lets you choose SDR or HDR capture formats; screen recordings use HEVC in either case (HDR recordings use HEVC HDR10).
Screen recording not working? Fixes
| Problem | What Apple documents | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No Record button | Add Screen Recording to Control Center | Customize Control Center → Add a Control → Screen Recording |
| No microphone sound | Turn Microphone on via touch-and-hold Record | Hold Record → Microphone on → start again |
| Black screen / blocked content | Some apps may not allow recording | Try another app; don’t look for unofficial bypasses |
| Won’t start while mirroring | Can’t record and mirror at once | Stop AirPlay / screen mirroring, then record |
| Storage / format questions | SDR vs HDR under Screen Capture settings | Settings → General → Screen Capture |
No sound on the recording
Start with Microphone: touch and hold Record in Control Center and confirm Microphone is on before you tap Record / Start Recording. If the mic was off, record again. Apple also notes that some apps may not allow you to record audio—even when Microphone appears on—so a silent or partial-audio clip can be an app restriction, not a broken mic.
Record button missing or hard to find
Add Screen Recording through Control Center customization (User Guide). Also check other Control Center pages/groups if you created extra sections. Apple’s published Content & Privacy Restrictions list for Screen Time covers items such as Camera and AirDrop under Other Features; we did not find Screen Recording named as a separate toggle on Apple’s Screen Time pages we checked, so we’re not claiming Screen Time is the usual cause of a missing Record control.
Apps that block recording, or mirroring conflict
Apple’s note is brief and firm: some apps might not allow you to record audio or video, and you can’t record while using screen mirroring (HT102653). That includes many streaming and call apps. This guide doesn’t cover workarounds that try to bypass those blocks.
Trim or edit the recording
Once the clip is in Photos, trim it like any other video. From Apple Support HT104968:
- Open the Photos app and tap the screen recording.
- Tap the Edit button.
- Move the sliders on both sides of the timeline to set new start and stop times. Preview with Play if you want.
- Tap Done, then tap Save Video (keeps only the trimmed version) or Save Video as New Clip (keeps the original plus a trimmed copy).
To undo a trim on iPhone: open the video → Edit → Revert → Revert to Original (HT104968; also in the Trim video length guide). Apple notes that a clip saved with Save Video as New Clip can’t be reverted to the pre-trim length the same way.
FAQ
Why is there no sound on my iPhone screen recording?
Turn the Microphone on: touch and hold Record in Control Center, tap Microphone, then start the recording again (HT102653). If Microphone was already on, the app you recorded may block audio—Apple says some apps don’t allow audio or video capture.
How long can you screen record on iPhone?
Apple’s Screen Recording pages we checked don’t publish a maximum duration. Practical limits are free storage, battery, and heat. Stop when you’re done and confirm the clip appears in Photos.
Can you screen record FaceTime or Netflix?
Apple states that some apps might not allow you to record audio or video (HT102653, User Guide). Streaming and call apps often fall in that category. We don’t describe ways to bypass those restrictions.
Where is the screen record button?
In Control Center (swipe down from the top-right on Face ID iPhones). If it’s missing, add Screen Recording from the controls gallery (HT102653, Customize Control Center).
How do I screen record on iPad?
The same Apple Support article covers iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (HT102653). For still captures on iPad, see our live guide on how to screenshot on iPad. A dedicated Mac screen-recording guide is planned at /how-to-screen-record-on-mac/ (not live yet).
Does the other person know if I screen record?
Apple’s Screen Recording support pages we checked don’t describe a universal notification to the other person. Whether anyone is alerted depends on the app (for example, an in-app screen-share feature is different from Control Center Screen Recording). Don’t assume silence means consent—follow the app’s rules and local law.
