Google Drive Storage Full? How to Free Up Space (2026)

Quick answer

If Google Drive says storage is full, free space across the shared 15 GB pool: empty Trash (and Spam) in Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, delete large Drive files and big Gmail attachments, then wait for the meter to refresh—or upgrade with Google One. Drive, Gmail, and Photos share one quota, so cleanup in any of them helps.

Key takeaways

  • One shared quota. Drive + Gmail + Photos (and WhatsApp backups on Android) share up to 15 GB free.
  • Empty Trash permanently. Items in Trash still count until you empty them (and Photos trash auto-deletes after 30 days).
  • Find heavy Drive files in Drive’s Storage view (largest first).
  • Find heavy Gmail mail with searches such as has:attachment larger:10M.
  • Over quota for 2 years can lead to content removal after Google’s advance notice—don’t ignore the warnings.

How we wrote this guide

Before you start

Sign in to the Google Account that shows the storage warning. Download any files you still need before permanent deletes. Emptying Trash cannot be undone. Workspace / school accounts may follow different admin rules—this guide is for personal Google Accounts.

Why Google Drive says storage is full

Google Drive storage is not a separate silo. Each personal Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos (Google One Help). When that pool is full, Drive is often the app that complains first—but Photos backups or a stuffed Gmail mailbox may be the real cause.

While over quota, Google says you can’t upload new Drive files or images, can’t back up Photos, may not send or receive Gmail normally, and can’t create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, and related files (others also can’t edit affected files until you free space). If you stay over quota for 2 years or longer, Google may remove content after contacting you at least 3 months beforehand.

How to check what is using storage

  1. Open Google Drive on the web at drive.google.com while signed in.
  2. In the left menu, open Storage (wording can vary slightly by layout). Google lists files you own, typically with larger files first—use that list to spot video dumps and old ZIPs.
  3. Open Google One storage from Photos, Drive, or Gmail “Manage storage” / storage manager when offered. Usage details break the pool down by service (Photos, Drive, Gmail, Trash).
  4. Remember Drive for desktop. Local disk free space on your PC is separate from Google Account storage (Google Drive Help). Clearing files only on your laptop does not free cloud quota unless those cloud copies are deleted too.

Empty Trash and Spam first

Deleted items often still count until Trash is emptied. Do all three products:

  1. Drive: open Trash in the left menu, review items, then empty trash permanently.
  2. Gmail: open Trash and Spam, delete what you don’t need, then empty Trash.
  3. Google Photos: open Trash / Bin. Photos moved to trash are permanently deleted after 30 days per Google’s storage help; you can empty sooner.

Data-loss warning

Permanent deletes cannot be recovered from Trash. If you might need a file later, download it with Google Takeout or Drive download first. We are not claiming a timed recovery window beyond what Google’s own Trash policies state for each product.

How to free space in Google Drive

  1. Open Storage in Drive and sort by size if the UI offers it.
  2. Delete large videos, installers, and duplicate folders you no longer need.
  3. Check Locked folders / app data if Google One’s manager lists them—hidden app data can still count.
  4. Empty Drive Trash again after deletes.
  5. Don’t rely on “Shared with me.” Those files use the owner’s quota. Making your own copy uses yours (Google One Help).

How to free space in Gmail

Gmail messages and attachments—including Spam and Trash—count toward the same 15 GB. On Gmail search, try:

  • has:attachment larger:10M — messages with attachments over about 10 MB
  • larger:5M — broadly large messages
  • in:spam / in:trash — then empty those folders

Delete (or download then delete) newsletter piles and old attachment threads, then empty Trash. Search operators are standard Gmail syntax; confirm results before bulk delete.

How to free space in Google Photos

Original-quality backups always count. Photos and videos backed up in Storage saver (formerly High quality) or Express after June 1, 2021 also count; Google notes that deleting older Storage saver items from before that date may free little or no quota (Google One Help).

  1. Open Google Photos › Utilities / Free up space (labels vary by app version) or Manage storage.
  2. Remove large videos and burst junk you don’t need.
  3. Empty Photos trash.
  4. On Android, check whether WhatsApp media backups are eating the same Google Account quota.

Android and WhatsApp backups

On Android, WhatsApp media backups and other device backups managed through Android backup settings can count toward the same Google Account quota as Drive and Gmail (Google One Help). If Drive looks small but storage is full, open WhatsApp › Settings › Chats › Chat backup and see whether a large Google Drive backup is enabled. Turning off or reducing that backup does not delete Drive files by itself—review Google’s WhatsApp backup docs in the WhatsApp app before you change anything.

Also scan Photos for long 4K videos and screen recordings. A handful of large clips often free more space than deleting hundreds of small images. After deletes, empty Photos trash so the quota can drop.

When to upgrade with Google One

If Photos and mail matter more than hours of cleanup, buy space. US list prices on one.google.com/about (checked October 16, 2026) include Basic 100 GB for $1.99/mo, Standard 200 GB for $2.99/mo, Google AI Plus from $4.99/mo (400 GB or 2 TB depending on the card), and Google AI Pro $19.99/mo for 5 TB. The free 15 GB is included in the plan total. Family sharing covers up to five other people on paid plans. Google says an upgrade can take up to 24 hours to appear.

If storage is still full

  • Wait for the meter. After large deletes, Google’s quota display can lag. We do not claim a fixed hour count beyond Google’s documented “up to 24 hours” for plan upgrades; give cleanup time to settle before re-buying storage.
  • Confirm you’re in the right account (personal vs Workspace).
  • Check Photos Storage saver history—deleting pre–June 2021 Storage saver items may not free space.
  • Download then delete remaining large Drive folders if you want offline archives.
  • Still blocked? Use Google’s storage manager cleanup suggestions and Google One support channels listed in Help.

FAQ

Why is Google Drive full when I barely use Drive?

Because the free 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Google Photos. A full Photos library or years of attachments can exhaust the quota even if My Drive looks empty.

Does emptying Trash free Google Drive storage?

Yes—items in Trash generally still count until you empty Trash in Drive (and you should also clear Gmail Trash/Spam and Photos trash). Photos trash items are permanently removed after 30 days if you don’t empty sooner.

Do Shared with me files fill my storage?

No. They count against the owner’s quota. Your copies, or files you upload into someone else’s folder, use yours.

Will Google delete my files if storage stays full?

Google’s help says that if you remain over quota for 2 years or longer, content may be removed after at least 3 months’ notice. Free space or upgrade before that.

Is Drive for desktop using my Google storage?

Local mirrored copies use your computer’s disk. Cloud files you own still count toward Google storage either way. Computer free space and Google quota are different meters.

What is the cheapest Google One upgrade in the US?

On one.google.com/about (checked October 16, 2026), Basic is listed at $1.99/mo for 100 GB. Re-check the live table before purchasing; prices and plan names can change.
