Quick answer
Put your AirPods in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, forget the device in Bluetooth if it appears, open the lid, then reset: hold the setup button about 15 seconds (AirPods 1–3 and Pro 1–2) or double-tap the front of the case three times (AirPods 4, 5, and Pro 3) until the status light flashes amber, then white. AirPods Max use the Digital Crown and the listening mode button instead.
Key takeaways
- Find your model first. The reset gesture changed with AirPods 4 / Pro 3 (and AirPods 5): no back-case button—triple double-tap the front.
- Try restart or unpair before a full reset. Apple’s User Guide lists restart → unpair → reset.
- Status light should flash amber, then white when the factory reset succeeds (Apple 118531).
- AirPods Max: hold Digital Crown + listening mode button until amber then white (~15 seconds).

Which AirPods do you have?
Reset steps depend on the generation. Apple’s Identify your AirPods page is the primary way to check: Settings → Bluetooth → More Info next to your AirPods, or read the model number on the underside of each bud (starts with A). AirPods Max print the number behind the left cushion.
| Model | Example model numbers | Year (Apple) | Reset method |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 1 | A1523, A1722 | 2016 | Hold setup button ~15 s |
| AirPods 2 | A2032, A2031 | 2019 | Hold setup button ~15 s |
| AirPods 3 | A2565, A2564 | 2021 | Hold setup button ~15 s |
| AirPods Pro 1 | A2084, A2083 | 2019 | Hold setup button ~15 s |
| AirPods Pro 2 | A2931 / A3047 families | 2022–2023 | Hold setup button ~15 s |
| AirPods 4 / 4 (ANC) | A3053 / A3056 families | 2024 | Double-tap front of case 3× |
| AirPods Pro 3 | A3063, A3064, A3065 | 2025 | Double-tap front of case 3× |
| AirPods 5 (both) | A3531 / A3439 families | 2026 | Double-tap front of case 3× |
| AirPods Max 1 / 2 | A2096 / A3184 / A3454 | 2020–2026 | Digital Crown + listening mode button |
AirPods 4 and later charging cases usually have no setup button on the back—Apple notes that for AirPods 4 in the Which AirPods do I have? guide. If your case has a button on the back, you’re almost certainly on the older hold-button reset.
Reset table by model
| Group | Models | Prep | Reset action | Success light |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Button cases | AirPods 1–3, Pro 1–2 | In case → lid closed 30 s → Forget This Device (if listed) → open lid | Hold setup button on back ~15 seconds | Amber, then white |
| Tap cases | AirPods 4 (all), 5 (both), Pro 3 | Same prep | Double-tap front while light is on; again when white; third time when faster | Amber, then white |
| Over-ear | AirPods Max 1 and 2 | On the headphones (no case button) | Hold Digital Crown + listening mode button ~15 s | Flashing amber → flashing white |
How to reset AirPods 1, 2, 3, Pro 1, and Pro 2
Apple groups these models together on Support 118531:
- Put your AirPods in their charging case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth. If your AirPods appear under My Devices, tap the More Info button, tap Forget This Device, then confirm. If they don’t appear, continue.
- Open the lid of the charging case.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.
- When the status light on the front flashes amber, then white, follow the on-screen steps to reconnect.
How to reset AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s Oct 13, 2026 update to 118531 covers AirPods 4 (all models), AirPods 5 (both models), and AirPods Pro 3 with the same tap sequence:
- Put your AirPods in their charging case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- Forget This Device in Settings → Bluetooth if the AirPods appear (same as above).
- Open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
- Double-tap again when the status light flashes white.
- Double-tap a third time when the status light flashes faster.
- When the light flashes amber, then white, reconnect from the on-screen prompts.
The AirPods User Guide shortens this to: open the lid, then double-tap the front of the case three times until amber then white.
How to reset AirPods Max
AirPods Max don’t use a case button. Per the User Guide:
- On the right headphone, press and hold the Digital Crown and the listening mode button at the same time.
- Keep holding until the status light next to the charging port changes from flashing amber to flashing white (about 15 seconds).
Restart vs reset on Max
A shorter hold (~10 seconds until amber) only restarts AirPods Max. Holding longer (~15 seconds to white) factory-resets them. Apple warns that holding past about 10 seconds moves from restart into reset.
Restart vs unpair vs reset: try the lighter fix first
Apple’s restart / unpair / reset guide recommends updating the paired device first, then trying lighter steps:
- Restart AirPods / Pro: put them in the case and close the lid for at least 10 seconds.
- Restart AirPods Max: hold Digital Crown + listening mode button until the light flashes amber (~10 seconds), then release immediately.
- Unpair: on iPhone/iPad, Settings → tap the AirPods name near the top → Forget This Device (removes them from all devices signed into the same Apple Account). Mac: System Settings → AirPods name → Forget This Device.
- Factory reset: only if restart and unpair didn’t fix the issue—use the model steps above.
If the status light doesn’t flash white
Apple’s troubleshooting on 118531:
- Put the AirPods in the case and close the lid for 20 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Repeat the reset for your model (hold setup button ~15 s, or the triple double-tap sequence for 4 / 5 / Pro 3) until amber then white.
- Reconnect: AirPods in the case, lid open, near your device, then follow the on-screen steps.
Reconnect after reset (iPhone, Mac, Android / Windows)
iPhone or iPad
With AirPods in the case and the lid open, hold the case near the device and follow the setup animation (Pair AirPods with an Apple device). Or open Settings → Bluetooth and pair manually: for tap-case models, double-tap the front until the light flashes white; for button-case models, hold the setup button until white.
Mac
System Settings → Bluetooth. Open the case. For AirPods 4 / 5 / Pro 3, double-tap the front until white; for older models, hold the setup button until white; for Max, hold the listening mode button ~5 seconds until white. Select your AirPods → Connect (Apple 108786).
Android, Windows, and other Bluetooth devices
Apple says you can use AirPods as a Bluetooth headset on non-Apple devices (listen and talk; no Siri). Turn on Bluetooth, put AirPods in pairing mode the same way as above (button hold or front double-tap until white, or Max listening mode button), then select them in the Bluetooth list (Pair with a non-Apple device).
FAQ
How do I reset AirPods without the case button?
AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3 don’t use a back-case button. Apple’s method is to double-tap the front of the open case three times (with the light-on → white → faster cues) until amber then white (Apple 118531).
Why won’t my AirPods reset / why isn’t the light flashing white?
Close the lid for 20 seconds, open it, and repeat the reset for your model. If it still fails, try charging the case, then reconnect with the lid open near your device. Apple documents this path on Support 118531.
Does resetting AirPods remove them from Find My?
Apple’s reset articles (118531 and the User Guide) don’t state that a factory reset removes AirPods from Find My. Unpairing with Forget This Device removes them from devices signed into that Apple Account. We don’t claim Find My removal beyond what those pages say.
How do I reset just one AirPod?
Apple’s factory-reset instructions put both AirPods in the case and reset the pair together. There is no separate official one-bud factory-reset path on 118531.
How do I reset AirPods without a phone?
You still need the charging case (or the Max buttons). Forgetting the device in Bluetooth is optional if the AirPods aren’t listed—Apple says to continue to the reset gesture. Reconnecting afterward is easiest with a phone, Mac, or any Bluetooth device.
How do I reset AirPods Max?
Hold the Digital Crown and the listening mode button together until the status light goes from flashing amber to flashing white (about 15 seconds), per the AirPods User Guide.
